KAMPALA. The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has said market demand for certified public accountants in Uganda has been harmonised.
This means that there is no more preference for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA) graduates.
After releasing the ICPAU examination for CPA, Certified Tax Advisor (CTA) and Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD) in Kampala last week, ICPAU president Protazio Begumisa told Daily Monitor that: “There is no difference in the market in Uganda for ACCA accountants CPA Uganda as it was in the past. The market has accepted the ACCA and CPA graduates and it believes they are the same in terms of professional competence.”
He added that the training being offered by ICPAU is the same as that of ACCA and the students who pass the course are qualified to do the same work in organisations where they are employed.
Mr Begumisa said in the past, Ugandans preferred ACCA to CPA Uganda in organisations but this is no longer the case because ICPAU is a member and uses the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) education training materials to train public accountants.
The IFAC is the global organisation for the accountancy profession dedicated to serving the public interest by strengthening the profession and contributing to the development of strong international economies. IFAC is comprised of more than 175 members and associates in more than 130 countries and jurisdictions, representing almost three million accountants in public practice, education, government service, industry, and commerce.
The chief executive officer of ICPAU, Mr Derick Nkajja, told Daily Monitor that the institute has acquired all the study materials for the CPA course for students.
“I am pleased to inform you that the study materials are now available and in use. Purchase of study materials will be a condition for first time registration for an examination in a subject. This condition starts with November 2017 examinations. We want to be sure that the students preparing for examinations have accessed the same basic study materials,” he said.
The current ICPAU results show that 107 candidates completed the CPA course in June 2017compared to 182 in November 2016.
