Can I change from an automatic to manual gearbox?

Hello Paul, My gearbox for Toyota Corolla (kikumi) is spoilt. I want to change from automatic to Manual transmission. Will it function well? Anthony Iko.

Hello Anthony, it is possible to convert the transmission system of your Toyota Corolla AE100 from automatic to the manual one. However it might cost you as much as buying another similar and locally re-used Corolla AE100 or might not be as trouble free or seamless exercise if you have a limited budget and don’t use a smart technician to carry out the conversion.
Transmission conversions require identifying a converter who will make necessary alterations to the car floor to accommodate the manual gearbox and its corresponding performance components. You will have to find the following: a suitable replacement manual gearbox new or quality used; a new set of pedals, gear linkage and shift stick; flywheel, a complete clutch kit and fork assemblies.

It may be necessary to replace the engine management computer and throttle unit (in case it is a petrol engine) with suitable replacements which are configured to work with a manual transmission. This is why you will need a smart convertor, patience and a good budget. The cost may be around Shs10m if you use quality used parts with a brand new clutch kit. Unless your car has vintage or sentimental value, why don’t you sell it as it is, top up and buy a locally used Corolla AE100 with a manual transmission.
