What is the consumption rate of a Rav4 model 2000?

What you need to know:

  • The engine electronic throttle unit should move freely without carbon deposits as this will affect clean air intake and affect the fuel air ratio.
  • The above components can cause the engine to run rich (delivering more fuel than air). The average fuel statistics can be improved by your driving habits (such as gentle acceleration and braking) and use of efficient detergency fuel (Shell Fuel Save Unleaded).

Hi Paul, I drive a Rav4 model 2000, with Toyota 1AZ-FE engine. I think my car is consuming a lot of fuel. For every 16 kilometres it, on average, consumes about three litres of petrol. Is this normal? Osbert Twijukye

Hello Osbert, your Toyota RAV4 fuel economy of approximately 5.3 kilometre per litre of petrol is on the high end.

The 1AZFE 2.0 litre 16 valve petrol engine on your RAV4 has fuel efficient technology which combines D4 (Direct Four Stratified) and VVTi (Variable Valve Timing intelligent) to give a fuel efficient performance.

The average fuel economy statistics for that engine are between 8.2 and 10 kilometres per litre while driving in city traffic and between 12 and 14 kilometre per litres on the highway.

These statistics can be improved or reduced depending on the engine tuning and service condition. Tuning the 1AZFE engine requires a good condition of the recommended iridium tipped genuine spark plugs and a clean air filter.

The engine oxygen sensors or air flow sensor which help the engine management system regulate amount of fuel delivered should not be faulty or aged.
