What is the problem with my Progrès?

Hi Paul, my Toyota Progrès does not accelerate after it starts however much I step on the accelerator. A check engine light shows on the dashboard. What could be the problem? Kiyingi Patrick.

Hello Patrick, you most likely have a faulty throttle potentiometer system. The throttle potentiometer unit has a butterfly valve, which is mechanically operated but controlled electronically.
This unit regulates engine air intake when you accelerate or during normal engine idle.
The throttle unit relies on a series of hall sensors to monitor the throttle position and pedal position while working in tandem with other sensors which monitor air intake volume, idle air and manifold absolute pressure.
A mechanical failure of the throttle potentiometer unit will prevent acceleration. This can be identified by physical inspection.
On the other hand a breakdown of any of the sensors especially the throttle position sensor and accelerator pedal sensor could also prevent acceleration.
A car computer diagnosis will help to confirm which sensor has failed.
