Which is best: sedan, station wagon or multipurpose cars?

When buying a car, we put emphasis on a number of things including body type, fuel consumption and purpose, among others. In Uganda, just like in any other country, we are subjected to different car body types.
For instance, the market has a variety of cars and they come in different formats such as saloons or sedans, estates and multipurpose vehicles (MPV) and SUVs.
But which of this is more popular than the other in terms of price and maintenance?

Sedans
These form the biggest number of cars in Uganda. A good number of first time buyers opt for sedan or saloon cars, which are considerably affordable and easy to maintain.
Most of them are low on fuel consumption and are easy to navigate, especially when it comes to parking. They are light and therefore fast on highways.
Their prices are considerably affordable ranging from between Shs13m and Shs25m. However, some command a much higher price of more than Shs30m.

Station wagon
For some reason, many people confuse station wagons with SUVs. SUVs such as Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander resemble station wagons but are not definitely station wagons.
Much as the front, some parts of the exterior and engine size are the same; a station wagon has a totally different interior and offers more space and a larger boot area.
In some car makes, station wagons are differentiated by their names such as Avant for Audi, Touring for BMW and V series for Volvo. Citroën uses Cross-Tourer, Peugeot (SW) for Station Wagon or Sports Wagon while Volkswagen and Saab use Kombi or Variant names for their estates.
They are spacious and a bit luxurious, which slightly explains the price tag associated with them.
Station wagons are good family cars and are ideal for long up-country trips, given that they are spacious and relatively raised.

Multi-purpose vehicles
MPVs or multipurpose vehicles are often bigger and longer. Much as they are not so different from sedans, they offer a larger interior and boot space.
Some of the examples include Ipsum, Mazda MPV, Nadia, Odyssey, Wish, Grand Chariot, Livina and Avanza.
Others include Dodge Journey, Mercedes Benz B-Class, Mercedes Benz R-Class, Volkswagen Touran, Renault Scenic and Verso.
Whereas most station wagons take up to five or seven passengers, most multipurpose vehicles take seven or more.
Multi purposeful vehicle are really multipurpose while on duty. Some are used as light commercial vans for merchandise such as stationery while others are be used as tour vans because of the vast interior.
With this space also comes a price. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, a typical MPV will cost much more than a sedan or a station wagon even when they have a similar engine size.
Engine sizes vary from manufacturers but may range between 1.5L to 3.5L with a start price of Shs15m onwards.
However, within the mix SUVs have also made a grand entry with the introduction of compact and more affordable versions. Indeed they have become popular versions.
But even then, sedans, station wagons and multipurpose vehicles remain a popular choice and from the look of things, it will be long before they are displaced.
