Why does my car shake violently?

Hi Paul, I bought an Audi A4 CC2000 but it has become a problem as it shakes violently all the time. I recently went to Luweero and on my way back I stopped somewhere but it failed to start. What could be the problem? David Lukwago

Hello David, the engine situation you describe is a misfire. This is when one or more of the engine cylinders stops delivering power to the engine.
This not only reduces performance but also potentially causes damage to crucial engine components such engine valves and catalytic converters by flooding unburnt fuel from the mulfunctioning combustion process.
When an engine misfire is severe, it sometimes causes the car to display a check engine light.
Engine stalling is an indication that the engine condition is critical and needs immediate attention.
Common causes are a faulty ignition system, a defective fuel delivery system or internal engine damaged.
Get a mechanic to inspect the ignition system, spark plugs, ignition coils or high tension leads and distributor if your car is pre 1999 model.
Fuel system checks by a mechanic should include the performance of fuel injectors. In case the ignition and fuel systems are fine the mechanic will have to rule out internal engine damage of the cylinder head, valves or pistons which can cause engine misfire because they will directly affect the combustion process.

Do I need new spark plugs?

Hi Paul, I have just bought a Land Cruiser V8 with 4.7 engine, 2002 model. How much fuel do I need to travel to Bukomansimbi, which is about 170km and back to Kampala? Byaruhanga James

Hello James, the 4.7 litre petrol V8 Land Cruiser’s declared fuel statistics are 11litres /100 kilometres (9 KM / litre of petrol) for highway driving.
A combination of highway and urban driving or the event of getting caught in intermittent traffic jams will drop your fuel economy down to 6 KM/ litre.
Covering 170 KM to Bukomansimbi will require 18.8 litres of petrol. Of course there are factors that may alter your fuel economy result such as your driving style, condition of engine tuning, tyre condition and vehicle passenger or cargo load.
Use of differentiated fuel will help you improve the normal fuel economy figures.
