Consumer Education Trust (Consent), a consumer rights advocacy group, has launched an anti-illicit trade campaign to protect consumers from being cheated.

Speaking at the launch in Kampala recently, Mr Henry Richard Kimera, said: “We shall engage policy makers to enact pro-people policies for present and future generations to protect them against irresponsible trade.”

Consent’s initiative seeks to raise awareness on the promotion of ethical practices among businesses and engage policy makers on the plight of consumer rights.

The initiative is a reaction to public outcry over the increased provision of counterfeit goods and substandard services.

Mr Kimera said aggrieved consumers shall be required to register complaints with a Consent web platform or at the organisation’s offices in Kampala, Gulu and Mbale for remedies to be sought in cases of product dissatisfaction.

He said the campaign will among others focus on food safety designed to conduct market surveillance in food markets and eating places.
