Kampala

The Uganda Investment Authority has said it will lobby the government for a VAT waiver on imported construction materials. Speaking during the launch of Spring Hills Apartments in Lubowa, Kampala last week, Dr Maggie Kigozi, the UIA executive director said whereas other sectors have tax waivers, construction – one of the fastest growing sectors is still burdened with high taxes.

She said: “We have incentives for the manufacturing sector, schools, hospitals and industrial development, but the construction industry has no incentives,” adding; “ government should institute waivers for the sector.”

Ms Kigozi was reacting to Mr Mitul Jobanputra, the managing director of Pearl Estates who asked government to waive taxes on the sector to benefit Ugandans in terms of cheap houses.
