Kampala
A total of about 183 mid-sized companies have submitted their credentials to be sieved for the November Top 100 Mid-sized company Awards. Speaking at a news conference in Kampala last week Ms Virginia Nkwanzi Isingoma, the Synovate Uganda (formerly Steadman) country manager, said the survey will examine the strength of mid-sized companies with a view of developing for them tailor-made solutions.
She said: “It is critical for the firms to submit both general and financial information so that the sample can reflect their accurate challenges and strengths,” she added, “this will provide an opportunity for development of solutions that can deal with challenges faced by most mid-sized companies.”
Participants
She said out of the 183 firms, which have so far registered, 50 participated last years. For the 2010 Awards the organisers are targeting at least 200 firms, from various sectors of the economy including; advertising and PR, agriculture, constructions, energy, health, hospitality and entertainment.
Other targeted areas include; IT, manufacturing, electronic print and publishing, mining, professional services, real estates, retail, telecommunication, transport and travel. However due to the rigorous analysis involved, banks, Saccos, insurance firms, law firm and accounting or financial consulting firm are not eligible to participate in the Awards.
Challenges
According to available information, at least two third of the companies involved are owned by Ugandans while the rest are owned by foreign proprietors. She said these companies, are faced with challenges including difficulty in getting appropriate and skilled staff, high taxes and accessing good foreign exchange rates.
The event organised by the Monitor Publications and KPMG – an audit and advisory firm, is sponsored by Stanbic Bank and Sage PASTEL- an accounting solutions firm. Last year, BTL Advertising - a Public Relations and communications firm emerged overall winners followed by HITECH Cables and Kasese Nail and Wood industry respectively.
