What you need to know:

  • Projections indicate that investment in the development phase will approximately be in the range of between Shs37.5 trillion and Shs56.3 trillion.
  • Most of this money is planned to be shared by Ugandans but this will only happen if they are prepared to compete.

Kampala. Local manufacturers will not cash in on the development phase, one of the most lucrative stages in the oil and gas sector, because most of them are not registered in the suppliers’ data base.

Many of the local manufacturers, according to Chinese old company, CNOOC, are also not aware of the requirement to register.

“We are getting into a development stage and we are afraid that not many of our manufactures are registered in the National Supplier Database. So many goods and services will be required and if they are not registered it means that most of the cash involved will not stay here,” Ms Jessica Kyeyune, the CNOOC Uganda national content manager, said in an interview.
It is important to note that it is only suppliers registered in the National Supplier Database that will be considered for oil and gas contracts. The data base was developed following market intelligence and due diligence to identify suppliers of goods and services that are required for the oil and gas sector.

For this reason, Ms Kyeyune said, we decided to partner with Uganda Manufacturers Association to encourage members register.
“Already we have foreign companies in the data base and so we also want to have as many local manufacturers as possible, something that is not the case presently,” she said.

Ms Kyeyune said this during a workshop of about 200 manufacturers that sought to highlight available opportunities in the oil and gas sector.
