“Uganda is naturally rich in terms of tourism. It has so many sites. The potential is huge, but most of the sites are not developed. If worked on it will increase the country’s revenue earnings,” Dr Ramesh Chandiru, Indian High Commissioner to Uganda

JINJA.
The government of India has unveiled plans to help Uganda develop a select number of tourism sites and provide training for workers in the tourism sector.

This was revealed last week by the Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, Dr Ramesh Chandiru, during a meeting he held with the Minister of Lands and Urban Development, Mr Daudi Migereko, in Jinja.

Mr Chandiru said though Uganda is almost three times smaller than Turkey, which annually rakes in approximately Shs35 billion from tourism, it has an immense potential which, if well harnessed, will help it compete favourably with some of the world’s biggest tourist destinations.

Minister Migereko who welcomed the Indian government’s offer, urged the High Commission to implement the plan through the Ministry of Tourism.
Last year, Uganda was named among the top 20 global tourism destinations by the National Geographic, an international travel channel affiliated to the National Geograpic Society.
In 2012, Lonely Planet, travel guide book, named Uganda as the best travel destination.
