Kaberuka leaves AfDB after decade

Kampala- After about a decade at the helm of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Mr Donald Kaberuka took to twitter to bid farewell and wish the new team, now steered by Nigeria’s former minister of agriculture and rural development, Mr Akinwumi Adesina, all the best.

During his tenure, the 63-year-old economist dedicated much of his energies in transforming the continent’s physical infrastructure and some economic development analysts are full of praises for him.

Road sector financing
Among the projects he oversaw before the end of his tenure was the approval of about $109 million (Shs400 billion) loan to the government of Uganda to finance the road sector support project and funding of the realisation of the National Development Plan (NDP) and Vision 2040 of Uganda.

“I can describe his time as transformational.
He focused on fundamentals that spur inclusive growth. He took a good choice to invest in infrastructure, skills and the private sector,” the executive director of the National Planning Authority, Mr Joseph Muvawala, told Daily Monitor yesterday.

Prof Augustus Nuwagaba, the Makerere University development economist, said: “Mr Kaberuka did well in supporting development projects in many African countries.

In Uganda, he supported water projects, health programmes and physical infrastructures.”
He added: “But the bank needs to focus more on supporting household incomes.”
