UETCL head retires after 30 years of service

KAMPALA. Energy Minister Irene Muloni, has tasked the actors in the energy sector to work towards creating demand for electricity so as to absorb the 1,200Megawatt which are to be added to the national grid in two years.
Speaking during the farewell ceremony for Mr Eriasi Kiyemba last week, Ms Muloni said for more than 30 years she has worked with Mr Kiyemba, he was a committed and hard working person and she expects the team he has left behind to continue from where he has departed because the energy sector I critical for Uganda to attain the middle income status.
“I thank you for the good work but the task ahead of us is very huge. The electricity tariff has to come down. Manufacturers are waiting for their 5 US cents per units, the capacity of electricity is on the upward trend,” she said.
She noted that industrialisation to take root, there is need for reliable and affordable power, meaning that the transmission facilities should be expanded and upgraded as well as increase the absorption capacity by getting more factories and industrial parks connected to the national grid.
Mr Kiyemba who has been the chief executive officer of the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited, since its inception in 2001, retired from the company last year after serving the energy sector for 32 years. He has been replaced by Engineer William Turyahiika who was his deputy and he is deputised by Valentine Katabira.
In his speech, Mr Kiyemba said: “I am among those who believe government took a good move to divest UEB because it was becoming inefficient. In 2000, only 5 per cent of the population was connected to the grid but today it is 20 per cent,” he said.
