Make your start-up a talent magnet

Well, when it comes to creating that ‘A’ team, it is a two-way process.
If you look at the big corporations today, they have built their reputation over the years in the market and they probably have the best talent in town ‘fighting’ for a placement in these companies.

The problem is, this will not be the case with your start-up, the best talent out there will look at the start-up as quite ‘risky’ for them.

As such what are the key areas that you would need to perfect your start-up to become a talent magnet?
Attend and speak at events
Networking will be a great tool at this level of the start-up. Getting to attend as many events as possible will be a great plus.

Besides attending the events there is need to prepare a pitch to potential talent just like pitching to an investor.
Speaking at these events as an invited guest would also definitely quickly throw your start-up to the limelight.

Attract local press
Most importantly, there is a great need for creating buzz as much as possible. Getting to have a local newspaper write about your start-up would be a great plus too.
Well, there is nothing as good as good press. A story about your start-up would definitely be great press.

Sponsor events
Sponsoring events would also be another plus given that your start-up will get the opportunity of getting mentioned.
Where your budget does not accommodate being a sponsor, you could offer to volunteer.

Know the talent
If you are looking for a software engineer, you better have a list of the top 10 in town.
Once you have the list, it would be key to get to meet them and their friends too.
The good thing is, if they are not ready to jump ship, they will probably know someone else who can equally get the job done.

Ultimately, attracting talent is definitely not an event but a continuous process and compared to ‘talent poaching’ would be more cost effective.
