Graphics design can pay your bills

You have the passion and skills to design pages, logos, fliers, newsletters, magazines, information sheets, letters or advertisements.
It’s probable that you have been volunteering to do this for others. But this is a skill which you can offer but at a fee and earn an income?
Ideally, graphic designers create visual concepts using computer software or by hand, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform and captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and product design for various applications such as advertisements, brochures, magazines and corporate reports.
So today, we want to take you through on how you can refine your graphics designing skills and earn big money.

In an interview with Prosper Magazine, Mr Newton Buteraba, the chief executive officer House of Wealth – a local firm offering business advisory services said: “Companies are always in hunting for branding that tells people about their products and services, something a graphics designer can do.”
Buteraba says if you follow the company guidelines and your customer needs, all you will need to start is a computer with applications such as Adobe InDesign.

Start
So then, what does it take to start this investment?
David Muyomba, a graphics designer also trading under ‘Blessed Hands’ brand, started this business five years ago and has no regrets.
Sharing his experience with Prosper magazine, Muyomba said: “Graphics designing is one investment or business that is so lucrative and once you get put your creativity and passion together, the sky will be the limit.”
Muyomba says ideally for one to start this business, if he/she already has a laptop - a Mac Book brand preferably - would require no capital to start.

However, if one doesn’t own a laptop, on the market rate, a good one costs about Shs4.5 million.
If you have a Mac Box Laptop, coupled with your creativity skills, you will then be good to go.
Muyomba says with good marketing, you can get at least three to four assignments in a month which would involve designing a magazine or company brochures.

“By designing a magazine, one will be assured of about Shs1 million and for a company brochure, this goes for about Shs300,000,” he shares.
With simple calculation, if you design two magazines and two brochures in a month, you will walk to the bank smiling with your Shs2.6 million.
Depending on your number of clients at the end of the year, your turnover will be in the range of Shs31.2 million.

Experts in this business say in this kind of work, just like playing a piano, one needs to master the skills and technics so that every day, you learn something new.
“If you do a good job, you will not even have to advertise but your work will do the magic for you and business will start flowing,” Muyomba shares.

According to industrial players, most markets can be sourced from corporate companies, manufacturers, private businesses, Non-Governmental organisations, embassies, schools and government agencies.
