What you need to know:

It is increasingly getting difficult to survive on a salary alone. However, you can make a difference by doing interior décor as a side business, writes Dorothy Nakaweesi.

As life gets tough, depending on a pay cheque is becoming difficult.
Having to wait for the cheque is nolonger sustainable and as such you can use your free time to create a business that will perhaps give you a financial buffer.
Therefore, as others juggle between jobs to make ends meet, you too can join them to make a difference in your life.
Surprisingly, when you start you will realize how easy it is and certainly rewarding.

Let say, you have a number of options but you choose to do interior décor, which today we shall concentrate on, how do you go about it?
Interior décor is simply the art of decoration. It can be a sitting room or a bedroom or a whole building where you play around with colours to create rare form of beauty.

According to experts, doing interior décor for a fee, can be a side job that can be done without compromising your main jobs.
Yes, the ability to mix colours and create beauty, according to Newton Buteraba, the chief executive officer House of Wealth, can be a source of income and it can certainly change your life.

According to Buteraba: “Interior décor is a lucrative business especially for stay home mothers because it is not stressful and demanding.”
Interior décor, he says, requires a touch of creativity, which can be attained through reading about colours or watching self-teaching videos posted on social media channels such as YouTube.
However, it is easier if you create an album that details the services you offer, the places you purchase your materials and the price for which you offer the service.

“If you are starting, find time and reach out to those already in the business by offering to work for free and use this time as your apprenticeship,” Buteraba says.
Ideally, starting this kind of business, apart from having starting capital, you will need to have a creative mind and the passion for design.

Learning how to decorate can be self-taught or attained through training and perfected through continuous practice.
“You can start by rearranging you home. It can be about furniture, curtains and flower pots or wallpaper. Alternatively you may get covers for your sofa,’ Susan Kizito an interior decorator, says.
According to Kizito, you will need about Shs500,000 as startup capital to buy a few items.

“You can use this money to buy sample items such as wallpaper, among others, which you can use demonstrate samples,” Kizito says.
Once you start working, depending on your customers and the effort you put in, charges for your services, experts say, should not exceed 20 per cent of the cost.
For instance, if according to your budget, completing interior décor of a client will take you Shs2m, add 20 per cent for your labour. This means you can charge about Shs400,000 for the service.

So, if you are lucky to work on three-clients each month this will leave you with an income of about Shs1.2m with an annual estimate of Shs14.4m.
Market for such services include corporate people but can also be a good service for young couples and those leaving a single life.
To boost your business, you can create pages on different social media platforms, through which you can amplify your business.
