Widening reach. Currently, Uganda has about six inland ferries, three wagon ferries, about two private ferries operated by private companies and ships, among others.
In Summary
MV Kaawa’s return. MV Kaawa returned on Uganda’s waters two months ago after its was repaired following a an accident which resulted into the ferry’s break down.
In just two months after the return of MV Kaawa, stakeholders are reporting a steady improvement in transportation of goods via the water network.
The government re-commissioned MV Kaawa two months ago to ply the Kampala – Mwanza route through the Dar es Salaam Port.
The ferry, which is managed by Rift Valley Railways (RVR), docks at Port Bell Luzira in Kampala.
Since its re-launch, the ferry has made five uninterrupted round trips between the ports of Mwanza and Port Bell, with intervals to load and off load at the different ports.
In a statement to Daily Monitor, Mr Sammy Gachuhi, the RVR general manager for Uganda, said the ferry is boosting trade activities among the EAC states by opening up Uganda to Tanzania.
He said: “With the capacity to carry up to more than 1,100 gross tonnes, the wagon ferry gives us an opportunity to service new clients on the southern route as well.”
