Uganda registers better tax compliance

Rwanda is the only country in EA that comes ahead of Uganda.

Uganda’s tax compliance has improved compared to other East Africa member states.

This is an indication that the country’s tax system is either bearing fruit or Ugandans have become more compliant tax payers in comparison to regional neighbours, including Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi.
According to the 2012 PwC Paying Taxes study, Uganda was ranked 93 out of 185 countries surveyed, ahead of its regional neighbours excluding Rwanda which is ranked ahead as the most compliant in East Africa.

“The time taken for tax payers to comply in Uganda has fallen by 24 hours over the eight years of the study,” said Mr Francis Kamulegeya, the PwC senior country partner.

Recently the Finance minister, Maria Kiwanuka, said the government was committed to improve its tax administration.

Mr Kamulegeya said there was room for more improvement given the current sensitisation by the Uganda Revenue Authority.
