Black spots are notorious for road accidents; often claiming many lives, especially on Uganda’s highways. Because some drivers do not follow traffic signs, it is rather harder for them to swiftly slow down at junctions to curtail accidents.

According to a baseline study by the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative titled Helmet use among commercial motorcyclists in Kampala and Mbale districts: Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of motorcycle-related injuries, the use of helmets among passengers is as low as 18 per cent for Kampala and 11 per cent in Mbale.

Many car owners have had to change their motor vehicle engines and install ‘stronger and better’ ones with the hope of making their cars more durable. Unknowingly, some fix a 2,000 cubic centimeter engine into a car that is meant to hold a 1,500 or 1000 cubic centimeter with the hope of increasing its power capacity. Unfortunately, this only spoils the car.

For example, drivers in countries such as United Kingdom, Austria, Indonesia, Japan, Uganda, Kenya, India, Pakistan, Botswana Afghanistan drive on the left side of the road while in some countries like China, United States, Russia, Nigeria, Germany, Rwanda, Somalia, Egypt, Turkey, Italy and Brazil, drivers keep right.

The central bank governor, Mr Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, has constantly been quoted saying Uganda’s dollar woes are brought about by speculators, and he has promised to deal with them. This seems to imply that there are people who foretell how the market will swing and they make decisions which are likely to make them a lot of money, but they also affect the rest of the market adversely. This may imply that speculative businessmen cash in when the market swings, whichever way it does.

The county is largely import based and moreover, the demand for our exports is price elastic as it depends on the healthy economic environment obtained in countries where we export our products. Indeed, because of the global financial meltdown since 2008, our exports (tourism, remittances from Nkuba Kyeyo and flowers) declined because they are not essentials in these economies where we export. It is easy for these commodities and services to be deleted from the household needs of countries where we export, hence, cutting our earning of foreign exchange. On the other hand, an analysis of imports by Ugandans reveals an inelastic demand to price.

Victor then had the audacity to ask me to carry the empty cylinder to him, about eight feet away. In complete disbelief, I asked him if he was serious. “Help me,” was his unrepentant response. I simply put the cylinder back into my car and walked into the office to let the manager know exactly what I thought of their service. The manager was away so I drove off with his telephone number. When the taxi is cruising and looking for passengers to pick up, the duo of the driver and conductor will spare no effort to make a prospect board their vehicle.
