Some days, you may dress up in the morning and at the back of your mind, you know that will turn heads as you walk. This feeling is very common among women. They might not be dressed in skimpy clothes but still get attention from people.

One Friday, I was all feeling cool in my tomboyish attire. I was wearing a black jacket, white shirt, blue flared jeans and light green old skool sneakers. I was smart. I had to go to some place along Jinja Road and by the time I got off the taxi, I was feeling a bit hot. But I did not remove the jacket then. So as I walked to my destination, I started feeling really hot and by this time, the traffic jam was heavy and all the vehicles had stopped.

You know how people stuck in a traffic jam can stare. It’s like I was the only person they could look at. Since I was feeling very hot, I decided to remove my jacket but I was feeling weird with all those pairs of eyes on me. However, after removing it, I felt something hanging out of the right side of my shirt and when I tried to check what it was, (Oh my God!), it was a bra strap. Can you imagine a black bra strap hanging out of a sparkling white shirt?

By that time, I was walking besides a Harrier car that was filled with guys who were openly staring at me and were asking me if I wanted a lift. I let my mind race at the fastest speed it could because I needed to deal with that embarrassment that very minute and within no time, I got an idea.

I decided to hold the jacket on my right arm so that it could cover the strap and while I was there, all feeling embarrassed, the traffic lights let the vehicles go. I let out a sigh of relief but still had to find a way of fixing the strap and when I got to my destination, I fixed it.

However when I got home, I decided to just sew the strap on to the bra although it was supposed to be removable. I decided to sew it so that next time I can enjoy the attention from people stuck in in traffic jam without having to worry about escaping black bra straps.

I think my embarrassment was short-lived but there are some women who wear white blouses and then decide to put on either a multi-coloured bra or a bra with a weird colour like red or white such that the whole world can visibly see the bra. Maybe they just ignore it but honestly, it’s embarrassing, a bra is supposed to be an under garment not something for everyone to see.
