Farmers receive 53,000 fish species

BUNDIBUGYO- At least 14 farmers in Bundibugyo District have received more than 53,000 fish species under the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) programme.
The fish species were distributed to farmers in the sub-counties of Mirambi, Harugale, and Bundibugyo town council.
While distributing the fish last week, Lt Col Christopher Mbazaki, the district OWC coordinator called on farmers to venture into different types of modern farming if they are to improve their household incomes.
He said government will also provide farmers with livestock, crops and poultry.
“I urge farmers not to misuse the items given to them so that many other people are able to benefit from the programme,” Lt Mbazaki said.
David Katuramu, a beneficiary of 13,000 fishlings who owns several fish ponds encouraged farmers, especially those living near wetlands, to embrace fish farming.
“I started with few fish species but with assistance from government I have been able to expand,” Katuramu said.
Wilson Mwiranda, the chairperson Harugale crime preventers’ youth SACCO said fish farming, which has been embraced by the group has greatly improved the members’ incomes which has in turn improved their standard of living.
William Musinguzi a fish species supplier from Aquafarm Consultants in Wakiso District tips: “Feed the fish three times a day at 8am, 1pm and 5pm.”
He cautions against pouring feed into the pond saying it is advisable to feed using cages.
