Are there times when you feel like not showing up at work while you are required to be there?
What are some of those excuses you give to get you off the hook? Do they sound realistic to your boss?
According to Rhitah Kirungi, a state attorney in Arua, some employees give excuses that seem so unreal that no one can believe in them.

“One day my office attendant sent me a message that she was unable to work. She claimed that on her way to office, she fell off a boda and her clothes got stained, though this might have been true, it was so vague an excuse,” says Kirungi.

Kirungi notes that the attendant’s excuse showed an element of unseriousness and also showed lack of commitment to work. She points out that if the attendant took her job seriously, she would have gone back home and changed and then reported for work though it was past the usual time of her arrival.
Below are some vague excuses that workers give for their absenteeism at their places of work;

It rained heavily
According to Nicholas Bashaija a radio presenter at KRC radio in Kabarole, if there is any excuse that workers should drop, it is the idea of not showing up for work because of the rain.

He says if you were born and raised in Uganda then you must be familiar with the weather changes. “Any responsible employee should never use rain as an excuse for not showing up for work. It is worse when the rest of your colleagues manage to show up in the rain and you don’t show up claiming there was so much rain,” he says.

There was heavy traffic; I failed to make it
Scovia Kamwebaze, a customer Relations personnel at Fenix International says for all people staying in Kampala or working in Kampala, traffic on the road is something that affects everyone but it should never be an excuse for somebody to dodge work.

“It is a matter of knowing how to plan your time effectively and travel early so that you are not affected,” she advises.

I ate so much at a party last night; I am facing a digestion problem
According to Kirungi, such type of excuses usually comes up when companies hold some functions and employees get a special treat.
“If the rest of your colleagues ate the same food and never got any complaints, then why should it only be you,” she wonders.
Such an excuse shows recklessness and workers should avoid them.

I will not work, my friend has lost a neighbour
Your friend’s neighbour is a third party in your life who should not affect your work.
“If you are to miss work because of death, then let it be for somebody that is close to you, not your friend’s neighbour,” she says.

I got a serious accident, only to show up without a scratch
According to Bashaija, some workers send messages to their bosses claiming they got accidents and they mysteriously report back to work all looking normal without any trace of an accident.
“Somebody tells his or her boss that they fell off a boda and broke their arm, but surprisingly they show up the following day without even a bandage. What a joke,” he wonders noting that some lies are too fake to be believed even by a child.
According to Bashaija, the issue of dodging work is unacceptable and unethical, but it gets worse when you give a lame excuse.
