Choosing a neckline that suits your body shape

The neckline is not just the starting point of an outfit, it is usually the first thing people will notice when they look at you. From a sea of necklines, one might find it hard to choose one that suits their body shape. This week we talked to Solomon Tazibone, a stylist and host of The Style Project on NTV, on what you should consider as you choose a type of neckline to wear. Necklines are usually described by the shape of their appearance. This is what you have to know about some of the most popular types.
V neckline. This appears in the shape of letter V. Its appearance helps give a vertical impression which is quite slimming. Tazibone advises that it is suitable for women with ample torsos (big busts), broad shoulders and short necks.
Square neckline. This one creates an illusion of length and a svelte frame as it elongates short necks. It balances out round faces and is much recommended for pear-shaped women, as it gives the torso a broader look.
Turtleneck or high neck. This one usually goes all the way up the neck and is very popular with sweaters. It compliments women with a square body shape and narrow shoulders. “It is totally unflattering for plus size women,” Tazibone notes.
Scoop neckline. This is characterised by a deep cut significantly below normal limits. Sometimes the cut is on the side baring one shoulder. He says this type of neckline helps elongate short necks and ‘softens’ long faces. “It is a total hit for the hourglass frame as it balances the look between the bust and bottom.”
Strapless, for example, the popular off-the-shoulder cut. This suits leaner frames with long necks, graceful shoulders with well sculpted collar bones and medium to small busts. “This neckline is not recommended for women with a round shape, as it ‘cuts’ off the upper section of the body hence shortening their appearance,” Tazibone advises.
Sweetheart neckline. This neckline has a heartshaped appearance at the bust. It flatters the cleavage, favouring women with big breasts. It is recommended for women with straight frames as it creates an illusion of curves.
Plunging neckline. This type of neckline falls steeply down the bust area showing off much of the skin. It is suitable for women with wide chests and ample breasts.
