“What is that nasty smell coming from your house” is one of those questions that we never want asked by either our relatives or friends who come visiting. It is embarrasing and if any of your visitors ever happened to pose this question, then, you definitely need to do something about the awful smell as quickly as possible.

Some sure ways of eliminating foul smells from our homes include regular cleaning of the different rooms in the house, washing of clothes and discarding of rubbish.

There is however the normal “no bad smell” that is fine, but there is also going the extra mile so that people will notice the good scent eminating from your home when they visit.

There are things you can use to achieve this and they include the following:

Essence sticks
These come in different flavours, mostly strawberry, vanilla and apple. Louise Mbekeka, an interrior and garden designer at Image Elegant Limited, says these are mostly ideal for the living, dining and bedrooms. These sticks work in such a way that when they are lit, they emit a scent similar to the flavour of the stick.

These sticks burn for over two hours and the scent can linger in a room for even an entire day after the stick burns out.

Scented candles
Just like the Essence sticks, these come in different flavours too including coffee. On top of the different flavours, they come in different sizes and shapes; small, medium and large candles in heart, round, short, fat, tall and many other shape varieties. Amounting to the numerous hazards that candles cause, Mbekeka advises that these be used only in the adults’ bedrooms.

However, one must make sure to put them off when going to sleep as they, like any other candles, may easily start a fire.

Air freshers
Annie Mirembe, another interior designer, advises that these be used only in the bathrooms, toilets and not (especially) inside children rooms.

Alex Kakoraki, a Medical Practitioner based at Murchison Bay Hospital, says it is because children can easily get respiratory allegies compared to the adults. He therefore advises parents to simply open their room windows in order to let fresh air in.

Air wink
This an air freshener device that emits fragrances when it is plugged into a socket. The device comes with different assorted fragrances too, such as lemon, strawberry and vanilla.

Perfume
If you have a favourite perfume, you could spray bits of it around the house especially on the curtains. Perfumes tend to leave a scent that can last for days compared to other types of scent-emitting devices.

Flowers and fruits
The best fruit scents are produced when the fruit is getting bad. For example, when an apple or strawberry is going bad, simply put it in a container and leave it in a room for a number of days until it completely dries.
