All about body shapers

Siisi Saetalu, the Country Co-ordinator for Lauma Lingerie, gives us the body shaper guide for proper usage;

What is the first thing you need to know when you go out to buy a body shaper?
Comfort is very important. Whichever piece you choose should be comfortable. Try it on before you purchase it so that you find the shaper that works for you and also fits well.

How does one choose the body shaper they need?
By considering the particular part of their body they are trying to conceal. Most times, it is the tummy, which is probaby why the waist trianer is the most popular. You may, however, want to consider the full shaper, so that you have the whole body looking well toned underneath your clothes.

Is there a particular person that you wouldn’t recommend to wear a shaper?
Pregnant women and those who just had a C-section shouldn’t wear body shapers.

Doesn’t the body shaper render physical exercise redundant?
Of course not. Working out is always the better option. Wearing body shapers will not give you permanent results. However, you could wear some of the shapers such as waist trainer while working out.

What are your tips for buying a body shaper?
• Trying on the pieces before you purchase them is very important.
• Always look out for the fabric of the shaper. If it is not stretchy fabric, then you shouldn’t buy it. The shaper need to be stretchy so that you feel comfortable.
• If you want to wear the body shaper with body hugging dresses and skirt, always look out for the seams of the shaper so that they don’t get outlined through your dress.

Shaping up!

Body shapers. With these items to hold in any extra fat, every woman can step out with an hourglass body shape.

For many plus-size women, a body-hugging dress or one in clingy fabrics, seems like an unattainable dream.

The extra flesh around the waistline and lower abdomen always makes wearing these kind of clothing impossible. However, that doesn’t have to be the case, thanks to the body shapers.

Today, the waist trainers in particular have become a popular hit with urban women. Walking around with all your tummy hanging out of your clothes is no longer acceptable, when one could simply invest in a body shaper.

With the the right-fitting body shaper, every woman can now streamline their body so that they have a perfect figure, even in the tightest of dresses.

Be sure to get a fitting and comfortable one though or you will suffer more harm than good to your health.

medical view: take precautions

According to Dr Akampa Mukuve, the senior house officer, Aga Khan Hospital, from a health perspective, you need to take some precaution when you use body shapers.

• Do not wear it too tightly. When it is too tight, it limits the normal contraction and could interfere with breathing.
• Do not wear it everyday to allow your natural body muscle function to continue and avoid stomach and intestinal difficulties which are a possibility with regular tightness around your trunk . Once a week would be the most ideal.
• Beware that body shapers only give temporary shape and will not in any way aid weight loss or muscle toning, both of which are best achieved through regular physical exercise.
