Birthday party

The challenge every year is to make this birthday party better than last year’s and the more parties you plan, the more you realise you are running out of ideas.

Once you have gotten the location and the menu sorted, it is down to the decor because that is what sets the mood. So, let me share a few considerations that will help determine the decor style;

First, you must be aware of the age of the celebrant. A party for a 10-year-old child will not be decorated like that of a 15-year-old. Neither will a party of a 30-year-old be the same as that of a 45-year-old.

These are different stages in life and so you will find that whilst those in their youth will prefer decor and accessories that are loud, vibrant, funky and weird. The other half who are classified as mature would prefer decor that has got a touch of elegance, subtlety and is explainable.

The colour scheme plays a huge role.
Far be it that you choose yellow and red for your grandfathers upcoming 70th birthday! The only time you can get away with this is if your grandfather still has his craze going on other than that, let us keep it safe! It is like attending a 50th wedding anniversary and the bride is wearing a princess/Cinderella gown in pink!

The profession or favourite of the celebrant. This is usually depicted in the choice of cake shape, that is, if the celebrant is a footballer then most likely the cake will be in form of a football.

So how about transferring this into the decor accessories such as serviettes, plates and table linen. If they are a musician or love music, why not have music notes or CDs accessorise the walls or dangle from the ceiling even still have various music instruments be the centre pieces for each table?

Finally, the location. Imagine setting up a 10-year-old’s party in a swanky hotel ballroom with the tables adorned with dinner candles placed on a bed of roses!

A hotel is not a bad location but why not by the pool side where they can swim in a pool donned with colourful balloons or in the gardens where they will run around and exhaust themselves!

Now, picture a 30-year-old’s birthday party venue being in an amusement park with children screaming from one end to the other, ice cream truck in the corner blaring nursery rhymes.

It really will not matter if your colour scheme, decor accessories are “mature”. The environment kills the whole picture.
