Extreme fashions

For the Laika collection showcased at the Glamour on Fleek fashion show, designer Kasule used alot of metal and leather in different colours and textures.

When he was told to prepare for a Glamour on Fleek-themed fashion show, Rafael Kasule interpreted this as desirous of extraordinary and wealth in creation.

He came up with a collection he called Laika, which he gave a twist so that they could be worn as costumes or just showcased as couture.

“I worked with a lot of leather and metallic for this particular collection. A lot of attention was paid to each piece to make it unique and memorable. If you look closely, you will notice that each dress had its own personality,” he says.

His inspiration, the designer says, is drawn alot from reptiles; To me, they represent the bold and scary side of life and creativity.”

One-on-one with designer K-Rafael

Uganda fashion designer, Raphael Kasule tells us more about his K-Rafael brand and the recently showcased Laiti collection.

What did you like the most in this collection?
My favourite is the multi-coloured short dress with spiders on it. I love its effect and simplicity.

Where would one wear these clothes?
I wouldn’t limit anyone to where they would wear them.

We are in a fast moving world and I’m personally creating a movement that is daring enough not to be restricted by place or time.

But to relate to functionality, they would apply to high end appearances, red carpet, and working for K-Rafael couture.

How do you come up with such designs?
That’s the least of my worries; I just make them work with less effort. It’s the gift and talent God gave me. Much respect to God, I only pick from the vast resources He created.
Tell us more about yourself.
Rafael Kasule is my name, which my brand name K -Rafael picks identity.

I was raised in Kampala and started my career at the age of 13. However, the defined genesis began in 2003 in my Senior Four when I was suspended.

During the break I got the idea to make denim bags for sale.
I had my first fashion show alongside Arapapa during my Senior Six vacation in February 2006.

I later went for studies in Nairobi for a diploma at the Evelyn’s College of Design. In 2007, I won the Redds African Fashion Designs award in Kenya. When I returned to Uganda, I worked as an assistant designer to Sylvia Owori.

Later, I broke out as an independent designer. I have done several shows of which my defining one was Uganda Fashion Week 2007. Basically, I have been in business since 200O, but the K- Rafael brand has only been in existence for five years.
We specialise in bespoke couture designs and men’s tailored suits. I should also take this opportunity to thank the people who have been there through my journey; my family, mentors, friends, media and above all, God.
