I’m better known for my cooking

Maurice Hasa

What you need to know:

Maurice Hasa. What else do you know about the Kaleke kasome singer? Well, take a discovery journey with Gloria Haguma and prepare to be impressed.

Tell me about yourself
I’m a musician and child activist. I use my music as a tool to advocate for children’s rights and values. I talk about child abuse such as defilement. I grew up in a Christian home but saw all these bad things happen to children in the community. I asked myself what I could do to change that and found the solution in using my music to bring these issues to light.
What has tied you down aside from the music?
I’m an ambassador for Child Africa, an NGO. It does charity work in Uganda, including sponsoring the education of more than 900 children. I am also an ambassador for Reach-a-Hand Uganda. I believe that the older generation has been corrupted. So the solution lies in mentoring the younger generation.

Tell me about your education.
I didn’t go so far with my education. I studied up to Senior Six, and then I did a catering course at the Jimmy Ssekasi vocational school. I opted for catering because I wanted something more practical, that I also loved.

You cook?
Yes. I’m actually a chef. I was known as the singing chef in the early days of my career. I have worked at numerous eateries and hotels such as Nandos, and Hotel Africana. Most people know me for cooking.

What would you recommend one to start with to learn to cook?
That would be to boil an egg and make tea.

Do you ever go unnoticed?
Yes, it happens a lot. And I like it that way. Most people recognise me after I have walked passed them. I like it that way though.

What has been your most unpleasant encounter with a fan?
I was once punched in the face by a fan in 2008, in Mbarara. I was leaving the stage after performing when someone jumped out of nowhere and punched me.
He actually broke my nose. Everyone was waiting to see my reaction. But I just walked away. I just feel like he was looking for his five minutes of fame.
Which Ugandan artiste wouldn’t you work with?

I would work with anybody. I have no reason not to work with anybody. From day one, I have tried to make sure that I don’t have any friction with anybody. If I sense a bit of tension, I back off and let the good harmony flow.
Is there a particular instrument you think makes a male artiste sexier?
That would be a guitar. It’s beautiful and complicated when it comes to playing it. When you can play it, the music it produces is amazing. Too bad I don’t know how to play one.
Have you suffered stage fright?
It happens all the time. Believe me, stage fright happens to even the best of artistes. I usually pray before I go on stage. When I step on stage, I get a bit of fever, but once I start singing, it gets better, and the fright goes away.
Which is the oddest celebrity habit you can’t let go of?

It is to do with the wardrobe. When you are a celebrity and you, for instance, use a particular shirt in a music video, you can’t wear it over and over, because the fans have already seen you wear it. People watch the video every day, so when you step out in the same item, they begin to comment on how you keep repeating the items.

Ever had a crush on anyone?
It was on a girl I grew up with. She was the one person that I would do anything for. I loved her with all my heart, but I never found the courage to tell her how I felt. My game was weak then. She was in Senior One, and I was in Primary Seven. She was older than me and a little more exposed to the world than I was. Too bad she treated me like her little brother. At the time, I probably wasn’t that brave to tell her. She actually got married recently, and I was at her wedding.
Have you been rejected before?

Yes. Every guy has been rejected at some point. And it normally happens when you go for a woman that is way out of your league.

There is this girl I met when I was at A’ Level. She was very beautiful, and I liked her. I approached her and told her how I felt, and how I wanted to go out on a date with her. She told me to write an application letter! She actually told me to put all I had said on paper. I was speechless. But it’s actually funny that sometime later, we met, when I was performing at a function.
Have you been successful with the ladies yet?

I have a girlfriend, who I have been seeing for the last three years. We have a child together, a beautiful baby girl.

Do you believe in third party opinions when it comes to relationships?
The lessons I have learnt about involving third parties have not been good ones. Normally, when I have an argument, or conflict, my solution is to get some time off alone to cool off.

I believe it is always better to consult with your inner self. Many of us tend to ignore our conscience, which is your most reliable ally when you are trying to decide on something.

Who are you most protective of?
My daughter. The society we live in today is very tricky, so I always keep an eye on my girl. I keep calling the nanny to check on her and ensure she is safe throughout the day. One wrong move can make her go astray, and I would be to blame.
Any milestone in her life you are looking forward to? That would be her graduation. That would be the key to prosperity in her life.
What is the meanest thing someone has said to you?
Someone once said that I was gay. I don’t want to point fingers, but it was bad. It was even put on the Internet.

Tit bits
Must have grooming item
Cologne. Scent is a very important aspect of my grooming.
If I were a piece of clothing…
I would like to be shoe. I love shoes. I am actually a shoe collector. I have about 40 pairs of shoes.
My idea of a romantic date setting is…
A dinner at the beach, at around 6pm, when the sun is setting.
I would rob a bank…
To pay for my daughter’s education. If I woke up one day and I was so broke, I would not let her drop out. I would rob a bank to get the money.
