Lighting for different spaces-II

In this second and final part, let us continue to explore the appropriate lighting for the different spaces in your room.
Bathrooms: This space is usually small and none-multipurpose.

One goes in there to perform specific tasks, that is, body sanitation. There is no chance that one would invite a friend and chat in there or sit to study making the only appropriate lighting is general/basic lighting.

However, if you have one of those spacious bathrooms with space enough to contain a vanity unit complete with a mirror, then you will need task lighting by the mirror. This explains why mirrors, especially as seen in movies or make up studios are surrounded by lights.

Dinning: In this space a lot happens; dinner parties are thrown, conversation is had, sometimes studying is done on the dining room table.

And so the right mood has to be set for whatever purpose your dinning room is going to serve. In most cases a single pendulum bulb is hung in line with the centre of the dining table (task light). If the table is rather big then you can employ two or three pendulums which serve both the purposes of providing light and decoration.

If you host dinner parties regularly then Decorative lighting would do for you. I’m talking a chandelier draped with crystals to add to the excitement of the evening.
Feature walls/ Focus walls: On these walls, works of art, family pictures are hung and because they are a centre of attraction, accent lighting would be most suitable.

This is a lighting style where a spot light is fixed over the art or below on the ground such that it flashes light above on the desired object. It’s mainly seen in galleries but can also be used in homes.

Master bedroom: This is the most intriguing room of any house or home. It’s like a vault, secrets are held in there, the most important people of the home retrieve to this space and so two kinds of lighting can suffice.

Ambience lighting (the one where we are able to create different moods). Use lights with filters or dim lights and Decorative lighting used just to provide beauty.

Corridors
These are spaces that are usually dark, narrow and boring with one pendulum light hanging...nothing to write home about. To spruce up this space with light, use recess lights. These are the lights that seem to be embedded in the ceiling and now come with energy saving bulbs.
