What you need to know:

Comical. Nasser Tonda commonly goes by his Facebook name, Sesa Bat. His Facebook posts have won him an enormous following. He spoke to Derrick Wandera about his life on and off social media.

Tell me about yourself?
My name is Nasser Tonda, I have two siblings and I come from a strong Muslim background. I grew up in a big family because in Africa we live in an extended family setting, which is a beauty we cherish.

How then did you become ‘Sesa Bat’?
I have had a good sense of humour since childhood. Despite the fact that at first I thought I was more of a singer, I later discovered through friends and family that I am a comedian.
One day my cousin suggested that I change my name Nasser to ‘Sesa’ (a Luganda word to mean someone who makes others laugh), I agreed to the suggestion and since I do extraordinary things, I thought the only flying mammal (Bat) would be the best description for myself.

What is your education background?
Some people think that I did not go to school. I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Community Psychology. I went to Godfrey Foundation Primary School in Kyadondo and later attended New Omega Nursery and Primary School where I completed my primary education. I went to Kisaasi College for my O-Level and then proceeded to Merryland High School in Entebbe before joining Makerere University.

How big is your following currently?
I have about 15,000 followers. I do not remember how I started gathering this huge following. It all started with a few pictures and captions and I was good to go. I even have fans from abroad stalking me in my inbox. They also demand for my content when I take long without posting.

Is there a time when you felt people had appreciated what you do?
Yes, When the Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga called me because of my comedy. He was very excited and he promised to promote my work.

What does your typical day look like?
I work in a small restaurant in Ntinda, Kampala. When I am not at the gym, I spend most of my day there. When I wake up, I post something then hit the gym, before going to work. Once in a while during the day, I scan through my Facebook page to catch up with the accumulating comments from followers. Out of what they say, I get what to post next.
When they meet me, some of my followers ask me why I do not have a car. Others even think (American singer) Rihanna gives me a lot of money since (according to my posts of celebrity photoshopped images, it appears that) I am always with her. They do not know my social media life is an act.

What is your ambition?
I want to join Hollywood. That has always been my dream and I hope I can achieve it someday.

Do some fans stalk you?
Very many times. They are always in my inbox. One day, a bold one clearly told me, ‘Sesa one day you will kill me…I really want you to kill me in bed too.’ This is when I decided that these Ugandan girls can get anything when they want it.

Sesa Bat’s Facebook
“I am a social media comedian. All I do is follow the trending news and events especially in the social world, make a meme of what the person has done and post. I do videos and Photoshop mostly. For example when Spice Diana got confused about her results, my fans demanded that I do a challenge. I have also done Photoshop while posing with Rihanna, and other international big musicians.”
