Shoe guide for the office

What you need to know:

Accessorising. Sylvia Owori, a fashion designer, gives some tips on how to choose the perfect shoe for the office.

Did you know that the shoes that you wear say a lot about you? It’s even worse for people with a corporate job because you definitely always want to leave an impression on your boss, colleagues and clients. As you tussle to look your best, do not forget your comfort and be true to your personal style.
Considering that shopping for shoes can be tricky, we bring you a guide to shopping for the appropriate shoes.

Pumps
Pumps are closed flat heels normally with an opening at the top. A classic pair of pumps makes for perfect office wear. Popular choices include patent, brown or black ones. These don’t only match on pants but also tights and a knee length dress.

Loafers
Loafers are the chicest substitute to your slippers. Patent leather loafers are the best option to an office appropriate look. Get creative and play off of these shoes with pleated skirts and pretty collars on a Friday outfit.

Oxfords
Oxfords are the most elegant flats you’ll own. Their lace up detail makes this menswear look-alike totally feminine. If tuxedo colours are not your style, find a unique pair of oxfords with cut outs, coloured heels, or metal cap-toes.

Colours
Though shoes come in all colours, you don’t want to look like a peacock at your office. Sylvia Owori advised that you choose subtle colours and match them with your cloth. Less bright colours such as black, brown, cream and maroon colours are normally advised for office.

Flats
Your feet can hardly get any lower to the ground than when they are in flats. You can still be wonderfully chic in these care-free shoes, as they can be found in a variety of textures.

Ankle-strap shoes
Ankle straps are dainty and totally feminine. Ankle strap heels can add understated elegance to jeans and a T-shirt look. They also hold firmly, however, high they are making them comfortable.

Kitten heels
A kitten heel is a short, slender heel, usually from 3.5 centimeters. They are comfortable alternative to a sky-high stiletto. Strut your way through it all in these mini heels. To nail this look, balance out your look with something extra special on top say a studded blazer.

Office-appropriate jewellery

If you work in an office, be careful what jewellery you wear. There is a difference between noisy and bulky, and simple but beautiful pieces, which should be your stapple for office jewellery. Here are some guidelines on how to make the perfect choice for office jewellery;
• If your work in an office space, be wary of the jewellery that you wear and how it can be interpreted. Wear subtle jewellery for the work environment.
• The chucky heavy jewellery should not be done in the serious office setting because they will make too much noise hence being distractive to your colleagues.
• If you are in a creative working kind of setting, you can accessorise heavily. For the office, strictly stick to simple and light-weight pieces such as the chandelier earring and multi-coloured necklaces.
• Dangling jeweller may not be appropriate either, and so is the multi-coloured one. There’s a temptation to buy jewellery with many colours so that it rhythms with all your outfits but then those that don’t match at the moment make you look disorganised. Also, gold and silver are ideal if in the right sizes.

Some jewellery you can wear to office includes;
Pearls
These are normally round small earrings and normally snow white in colour.
Studs
These normally come in silver and stick right on the ear.
Small earrings
These are not necessarily studs or pearls but can come in gold, silver or any other colour but to be fit for work, choose them in small sizes.
