Trendy paint colours for different rooms

What you need to know:

The boys’ room does not necessarily have to be painted blue anymore, or the girls’ pink, writes Lydia Ainomugisha.

Sometime back, it was almost obvious that baby girls’ rooms were painted pink and boys’ blue. But this has since changed, as interior designer Gloria Kawuma, reveals.
She tells us a bit about the new trending wall paint colours for different rooms.

The sitting room
Being the main room in the house where everyone converges, people nowadays tend to use bright and attractive colours. The trendy colours include; shades of turquoise, jade green and yellow-green.

The master bedroom
For your master bedroom, Kawuma advises that you choose calm colours because a bedroom is where you go to rest and relax after a long day. Most people are settling for colour pallets of deep green, blue and wine colours.
“I, however, always try to study one’s personality first so I can blend it into the colour they choose,” says Kawuma.

The children’s rooms
The boys’ bedrooms are now being painted grey, green and turquoise. The girls’ on the other hand have taken on paint in colour ranging from bright purple and lilac to red. Most parents prefer to use bright shades of these colours.
When it comes to the kitchen, she says people also opt for calm colours such as lime green and peach. These she says bring more life in one’s kitchen as well as allowing in enough light.

What to keep in mind

Richard Kitamirike, an interior designer, says when choosing an indoor colour always consider the size of the room. “If the room is small, choose a bright shade and balance it with a brilliant white ceiling as this will make the reflection from the bulbs bounce on the white ceiling hence making the room brighter.”

He says darker pallets of colours such as purple make the room appear darker so if the room will also serve as a reading room then these are discouraged.
He adds, “but if it’s a children’s room, then it’s okay to use the deep colours since they don’t need too much brightness in their bedroom.”
