According to the survey she has done, there is a high rate of cancer in Uganda and people are not aware of this. “I have read patients’ files and I realise that Uganda Cancer Institute has good doctors, but other hospitals across the country don’t have enough doctors and resources and so patients have to come to Mulago where resources are not enough,” she says.

But even then, she has observed that there is not so much effort collectively put in the fight against cancer in Uganda. “When you are in the UK, you see big billboards on the streets about cancer just like the ones here about HIV/Aids,” she says. She is quick to add that she understands the country still has so many other epidemics to throw its weight behind. She has found out that cancers that affect women like cervical and breast cancers are the most common. Others are Kaposis Sarcoma which has been brought about by HIV/Aids and Burkittis Lymphoma which kills children most.

On her blog sylvia-ucrf.blogspot.com, she has fundraised money from wellwishers abroad to support the cancer cause in Uganda. Kamya represents what ought to be done by the youth out there to make this world a better place. When she goes back to Scotland, she plans to carry out more fundraising towards the fight against cancer.
