Did you know that some of the foods in your kitchen can help to fight depression? Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. A depressed person usually has symptoms such as a feeling of sadness, frustration and loss of temper. Doreen Namaganda, a nutritionist at Case Hospital highlights some foods that could help to manage depression. These foods contain nutrients that stimulate glands and hormones, which subsequently trigger happiness.
Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits such as lemon, oranges or grapes are rich in Vitamin C, which acts as a antioxidants and helps to improve brain function. When the brain is functioning properly, it becomes easier to get rid of depression.

Zinc, manganese and selenium are some of the essential minerals found in foods such as pumpkin seeds and cucumber. Theses minerals work as brain building nutrients, and are therefore considered essential in preventing depression.

Whole grain
Wheat flour is used to make bread and other snacks such as cookies and cakes. However, flour is also rich in carbohydrates and fibre, which are recommended sources of energy for the body, including the brain.

These are rich in potassium mineral, which is vital for the normal functioning of the heart. Bananas also provide energy, help in development of cells, and promote the health of the nervous system. Eating bananas regularly can build your Vitamin B level, also prevent depression.

They contain a lot of vitamin folate and magnesium, which are responsible for fighting depression.
Oily fish
Foods rich in omega-3-fatty acids such as fish, are essential for the body because they help improve brain function and heart health.
