The truth about artificial teeth

Dear Dentist, I had a number of teeth removed due to tooth decay. I would like to replace them with artificial ones. However, I am told some artificial teeth are not good, as they may damage the gum or even cause cancer. Is this true?

Dear Regina, there several misconceptions about artificial teeth and other dental treatments. Thus, it is better to seek advice from concerned professionals.

There are different types of artificial teeth and their application varies depending on the dentist’s decision after a professional examination.

Restoring your dental formula is key since teeth perform different functions which include chewing, phonetics (talking), aesthetics (keeping the facial alignment or beauty) and to some extent, self defence (biting your enemy).

There are three types of artificial teeth;
1. Partial dentures - These require daily removal and cleaning, especially at night as you go to sleep. They are the lowest cost type and are most appropriate for people whose oral hygiene is satisfactory. They can be made for both anterior and posterior teeth, and for people who have lost all their teeth.

2. The bridge - This is fixed and most appropriate for front teeth, though it can be made even for posterior teeth. Patients need to be educated about this treatment. It is effective for people who still have some strong teeth. It is not possible for people without any teeth.

3. The implant - This is the most expensive of all types and it needs to be fixed effectively by an orthodontist (a dentist specialised in prosthetic treatments). The missing or extracted tooth is fixed from the jawbone and it is always very strong.
For all types of artificial teeth, if they are properly fixed, no one can tell that they are not your natural teeth.

Effect on one’s health
All types of artificial teeth have no negative effect on your body. However, the removable artificial teeth can cause reddening of the gum which can lead to gum disease or inflammation of the gum and unpleasant smell from the mouth, if one fails to keep his or her mouth clean.

Durability
Removable dentures can be used for seven years and beyond, if maintained properly. In case of any loosening, a dentist can fix them. Bridges and implants last not less than 10 years if well made. To use any type of artificial teeth for along time, follow the doctor’s instructions as much as possible.

However, since artificial teeth vary in costing and suitability, clients should seek porfessional dental advice for proper diagnosis and management.
