Ways to reduce snoring

Dr Richard Byaruhanga, an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist at Kampala ENT clinic in Kamwokya recommends some easy remedies.

Peppermint
The anti-inflammatory property in peppermint helps reduce swelling of the membranes in the lining of the throat and nostrils, thus promoting easy and smooth breathing. Add one or two drops of peppermint oil to a glass of water and gargle before going to bed.
Olive oil
Drink two to three teaspoons of olive oil daily before going to bed. Being a strong anti-inflammatory agent, olive oil will help ease the tissues found along the respiratory passages, reducing the swelling to provide a clear passage for air.

Steaming
One of the best solutions to reduce congestion is to inhale steam. Put hot water into a large bowl. Add four drops of eucalyptus or tea tree oil, hold a towel over your head and inhale the steam deeply through your nose. This can be done for about 10 minutes every day.
Clarified butter or ghee
These have medicinal properties that can open up blocked nasal passages. Slightly warm small amounts of clarified butter or ghee and apply three drops into each nostril. This can be daily before going to bed and in the morning.

Turmeric
Turmeric should be used with milk to treat snoring. The mixture will help you breathe freely while you sleep and also boost your immune system. Add two teaspoons of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and drink 30 minutes before sleeping.
