I have been vomiting yellow fluids and been advised to get Hep B vaccination. Where can I get it?

Sam
Dear Sam,
Normally bile is poured from the gall bladder into the first part of the small intestines just after the stomach (duodenum) to help digest food. This yellow bile if one has vomited when the stomach is empty of food can be sucked back into the stomach leading to a person vomiting yellow.
It is true that a person with hepatitis A, B or C may get yellow eyes and deep yellow urine and may also vomit yellow when he vomits on an empty stomach but when at the same time he has yellow eyes this may indicate liver damage.
Hepatitis immunisation should be given to any person who is checked and found not to be infected with the germ already. This immunisation is done at various places. However, you should be checked first to establish why you vomit so that with correction the vomiting will stop.

I take antibiotics often for my allergy. Can antibiotics affect my fertility in future?

Amos

Dear Amos,
Antibiotics are drugs that are used to stop growth of or to kill bacteria. These drugs can be toxic to a human body the reason they have appropriate dosages.
Many Ugandans self-prescribe antibiotics risking resistance apart from leading to serious side effects which doctors may mistake and treat as other disease conditions. Whereas antibiotics can be used to treat infections including STDs that cause infertility, they can on their own lead to infertility.
Antibiotics including Gentamycin, Erythromycin, Tetracycline and Nitrofurantoin have been implicated in reducing sperm quality and quantity risking infertility. When one stops abusing these antibiotics, the semen quality and quantity improve.

What causes paralysing pain around the lower back? I have taken almost all types of tablets but no improvement. I feel as if I have pus in the back.

Charles

Dear Charles,
Lower back pain is usually caused by problems with the structures of the back including the skin, ligaments, muscles, bones or the cushions between the back bones (discs).
Sometimes lower back pain may be caused by being overweight or problems with the structures in the abdomen that may include the womb or fallopian tubes, the rectum, the kidneys and the urinary bladder among others.
Feeling like pus in the back could be because of problems with any of the mentioned areas.

An X-ray of the back sometimes may show the cause if it is directly from the back. Tuberculosis infection of the back can cause pus formation in the back which pus may even reach the groin in what is called a cold abscess.
Feeling hot like there is fire might indicate infection, however pressure on the nerves caused by back problems may also lead to your kind of feeling.

I get this flu when I am pregnant and I can not sleep. What else can I take because I am tired of predinsone?
Esther

Dear Esther,
It is common to have a running or stuffy nose during pregnancy even when this is not associated with allergies or a common cold.
This so-called Rhinitis of pregnancy, may start early in pregnancy, go on its own in a few months or last until delivery or after.
Higher amounts of pregnancy hormone as well as increased amounts of blood in the body during pregnancy are said to lead to this.
It is dangerous to take unprescribed drugs (including prednisone which is a steroid) during pregnancy and especially during the first three months because this can lead to birth defects in the forming baby.
If the rhinitis is not serious it should be left alone. However, drinking lots of warm fluids (with no dehydrating caffeine,) using salt drops in the congested nose, avoiding smoking, exercising and propping the head up, with a pillow when lying flat may ease the symptoms.
If these fail please do not take any drugs including those over the counter but see your doctor for help.
