Dear Doctor:I am 38 years old with a 20-year-old child. Recently I got another man and for three months I did not get my periods. I thought I was pregnant and even got signs of pregnancy like a racing heart, weakness, neck pulse and headache. What caused that?
Anita Ssebuggwawo

Dear Anita: Many women who take long getting pregnant, may get stressed and anxious. The stress and anxiety may be worsened by getting a new spouse yet they still cannot bear him even a single child. The stress and anxiety may lead to symptoms including a racing heart, general body weakness, headache and missing periods.
The same symptoms including missing periods may also occur when a woman is nearing menopause.
Though the average age of onset for “natural” menopause in Uganda is about 45 years, due to genetics, illness, or removal of the ovaries, some women may go through menopause before the age of 40. Menopause symptoms are especially severe when a woman gets menopause earlier than expected.
