Is it true that a dead man can have sex and father children?

Dear Mose,
Death happens due to cessation of all bodily activities. A dead man cannot have sex unless another person, say a woman, commits necrophilia on him. Necrophilia is a sexual attraction or sexual act involving corpses. Even then, he is unlikely to father children unless he died during ejaculation with the same woman.

A man on life support but who is brain dead may be assumed to still have a functioning reproductive system. Even then, a woman will have to perform the sex act on him if at all he miraculously gets an erection. That said, a man can die and within 24 hours his sperms can get retrieved and stored so that he can father children even after death.

Postmortem erections (Angel lust) can happen spontaneously without sexual arousal in those killed violently by hanging, gunshot or having committed suicide. Theoretically, these can impregnate a woman if she commits necrophilia in the early hours of death when there is a post mortem erection.

However, in death men may discharge urine, mucus or prostatic fluid without sperms meaning that the discharged fluids are unlikely to lead to a pregnancy. The discharged fluids may, however, contain sperms if the dead person had played sex earlier on. This is also true if one had angel lust due to a Viagra overdose, then a postmortem erection may discharge fluids with some sperms if one had ejaculated sperm-filled semen before death.

Storing sperm
Death. Sperm can be frozen for future use either in artificial insemination or other fertility treatments. You and your partner can consider storing sperm in case of sudden death.
Getting help. Visit your doctor so that you can talk through the options available to you. In case your partner passes on before the ability to store his sperm, consider the option of adopting children.
