Whenever I am ‘broke’ I fail to get an erection. Why? Erasmus

Dear Erasmus,
Today many Ugandans are stressed by many things, including being broke. Stress can lead to many symptoms, including erection difficulties.
Erections happen automatically under the control of the brain, the more reason it is said that 80 per cent of sex is in the brain and as such one of the most important sex organs is the brain. It is not surprising therefore that erections can happen even when we are asleep.
The brain under favourable circumstances sends messages to the penis to cause an erection. The automatic nerves of the parasympathetic system (feed, rest and breed) usually calms down a person and are largely responsible for causing an erection.
The other one which responds to stress (fear, fight and flight reaction), the sympathetic system usually leads to ejaculation. However, when one is under lots of stress, the sympathetic system will compete with the parasympathetic system hence curtailing messages reaching the penis to cause an erection.

Protect your erection
• Watch what you eat. A diet that is bad for a man’s heart is also not good for his ability to have erections.
• Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight can bring many health problems, including type 2 diabetes, which can cause nerve damage. If the diabetes affects the nerves that supply the penis, erectile dysfunction can result.
