This house plan is a sleek modern oasis for a young family. It has a lot of space that can be repurposed with time. Simon Peter Kazibwe, its designer, notes that although the plan is modest in size, it has ample living and storage spaces, which offer great function and dazzling form.

Aesthetically, double storeyedhouses have that more elegant and imposing look due to their elevated shape compared to their bungalow type counterparts.

Double storeyed houses are in greater demand now because people have been exposed to plush homes thanks to technology so they want more in their houses than just four walls. The rising private property market also means that space is more expensive so it makes sense to make the most of a limited footprint by going multi-storey.

This plan has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two entertainment areas half baths, two spacious balconies on the first floor, a spacious verandah and a shade on the ground floor. This plan’s special touches are its spacious living rooms that can be found on more than just one level.

Instead of including just stairs, the ones in this house plan, have been designed to allow enough space underneath. The space can be used for many other purposes although in this particular plan, the space was meant to become a storage area.

In addition to the walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom, the glamorous master bedroom has its own terrace that is only accessible from inside the room.

Ground floor
The ground floor is the centre for the family’s living area. It contains a bedroom and a communal bathroom. These take up one corner of the floor.

The rest of the space has been designated for the living room, dining room, a storage space, a lounge, a kitchen that has its own verandah, a lobby and a main entrance verandah. The kitchen can be accessed either through the dining room or from the outside as it opens onto a verandah.

Downstairs offers the family a large activity area that can extend to outdoor space should the need to use the shade or verandah arise.

Cozy feeling
The ground floor has an open plan layout where the living room flows into the dining room which shares the same space with the kitchen. The open and airy space is both cozy and intimate; the way a home should feel.

That dining room and kitchen flow into each other, encouraging shared family meals while the livingroom opens onto the outdoor lounge. Although designed to flow into each other, the spaces have an open and airy feel with a layering of light textures, a mix of rustic and modern with stylish touches throughout.

The two levels enable rooms to be more spacious than ordinary bungalows, and makes them more popular with couples and families who like more room.

A double storeyed house, according to Kazibwe also means there is more flexibility when giving it a makeover; there is a possibility of knocking down walls to create more rooms.
Estimated to cost between Shs85m and Shs95m, the design can fit perfectly on a 100x100ft or 100x50ft.

Family size
Although the design is popular Haruna Bbale, a contractor has reservations about this plan for average families.

“If you are building for a large family, taking up an entire floor for just a master bedroom can feel like wastage of space because it uses half the space, so if you’re building a home with a smaller footprint, you might not have the room to create the space you want for other things,” Bbale explains.

He also notes that this might be inconvenient for families with babies or elderly parents because it means that someone will be running up and down the stairs to provide necessary care.

The materials

The use of materials like concrete, vinyl, glass and wood emphasises the importance of progressive architecture. These modern industrial elements add to the modern day allure of the house while adding to its sleek contemporary design and feel.
