Bring the ocean into your house

You can place an aquarium in any part of the house. All you need to consider is the available space and the amount of traffic around it.

Adding an aquarium to any room in your house is a sure way of making it look beautiful and colourful.
Keeping an aquarium in your house helps you get rid of stress because simply looking at those colourful fish play in water, calms your nerves.

For décor
However, this is not the main reason why people put aquariums in their house.

Jeremiah Ntambi an engineer at Struktur Association Limited says explains that an aquarium certainly decorates the living room if displayed naturally with colourful fish such as the living jewels. You can also keep Guppies, mollies, tetra, danios, barb, bettas, plecostomus (sucker fish), oscars, angelfish black moor (Besigye fish) and goldfish.

He adds that an aquarium can be used as a great corner or center piece in your house.

“Try to place your aquarium in a place you can easily see it in order to notice any sudden changes in the behaviour of your fish or if they get sick or there are some cracks, but avoid spaces with a lot of movement,” Ntambi says.

Aquariums come in different sizes so you will choose one depending on the available space in your house. However, Ntambi explains that almost any size, from large to small, will have a value.
“A large aquarium is great, but if space is limited, a small one can also work.”

He, however, adds that it is the fish in the aquarium that makes it look nice so it is important that you take good care of them. Ntambi warns that you should avoid mixing large fish with the small ones as they stand a chance of being eaten in case there is no food to feed on.
“Stocking good species of fish in the right sizes can also help you maintain peace in your tank reducing the death rate,’’ Ntambi explains.
He adds, “Do not put things such as bread in your tank as fish do not eat it and when it rots in the tank, it makes the water poisonous.’’

Maintenance

Ntambi also warns that the most common fish killer is over feeding them. “When they are over fed, they expand faster than they can shade their scales and die,’’ he asserts.

One can keep their fish from dying by regularly changing the water in the tank.’’ He explains that by looking carefully at the water in your tank, you can tell a lot of things even without special equipment. These include the colour of the water and the smell,’’ Ntambi asserts.

However, he also warns that when changing the water in the tank, you should not empty it at once without the help of an expert. “Alternatively, install a quality water filter in your tank. This will remove the ammonium from the fish wastes and the chlorine from the tap water.”

Ntambi further explains that cleaning of the tank (aquarium) depends on the type of fish you have and the strength of your filter. The filter has to be cleaned regularly like once a week while it may take a month or even more to do a complete water change.
