Advantages of adding wire mesh to your home
Wire mesh is most easily noticeable in window screens and screen doors, but it can also be used in many other ways.
It is used in fencing, as room dividers, and shelving. It can also be found behind the scenes in ceilings, walls, or in plumbing.
Edward Paul, a resident of Kololo for more than 30 years, says he totally got rid of a constant bug and insect problem from his house after installing wire mesh in both his windows and doors.
“I live in an environment that is surrounded by shrubs and trees and although many would find their way into my home, I have not had any problems and my house is always free.
Even mosquitoes do not disturb me and my family,” he says.
Hassan Sentongo, the chief projects manager of Ruparellia group, says while building a house, one should look at the surrounding environment and try as much as possible to keep the internal atmosphere safe from anything that can harm the occupants.
“Wire mesh filters the air by keeping away dust which could be harmful to occupants’ health,” Sentongo says adding, “other types of wire mesh can also filter the air especially in highly industrialised zones which protects people from getting infections.”
Other advantages include protecting glass windows and doors from breakage in case an object is thrown at them.
Samson Kakuuku who works at Speke Apartments says wire mesh is used for avoiding mosquitos which spread malaria from entering the house. He says they also placed wiremesh on doors to keep away snakes, rats and other unwanted animals.
Jane Nabanakulya built a home for her mother in Kayunga Bugerere. However, when her mother passed on and the house remained vacant for a while, it was invaded by bats which found home in the ceiling and started destroying it and the whole house. A friend advised her to install wire mesh when renovating the house and since the bats have totally migrated.
Hassan Nsimbambi, a site engineer, says wire mesh is so common because it is the least expensive and most effective tool for so many applications. Its versatility and wide collection of sizes makes it perfect for many jobs both around the home and in commercial scenarios.
“In addition to opening size, material make up, and construction techniques, wire mesh can also be found in various styles and designs. If you want a different look than the standard square opening, there are many “decorative” meshes available that feature more visually interesting appearances,” he advises.

Wire mesh is prone to rust especially when it rains.
Types
According to home advisor.com, an online portal, woven wire mesh with very small openings is often called wire cloth. It is the most popular variety of wire mesh because it is widely used in screens for windows and doors. Wire cloth comes in a number of different opening sizes. If you are looking to create airflow, but keep small bugs out, wire cloth is for you; it is the perfect material to use for enclosing a porch or patio.
Welded wire mesh
Welded wire mesh is used for more heavy-duty jobs. In this kind of mesh, the wires are welded together at each cross section, which makes for a very strong product. Heavier gauges are often used in commercial and industrial settings to create barriers or for security. Around the house, however, it is most often found in fencing.
Knit wire
Knit wire is commonly referred to as chicken wire. Though its original purpose was to provide an inexpensive barrier for livestock, chicken wire has found its way into many interesting and imaginative applications. Closely related to knit wire is the chain link fence (also considered a mesh). Very inexpensive, very durable, and is used all over the place where a low-cost, highly effective barrier is needed in a hurry.
