Concrete ceilings have become a common trend. While they make a house look nice, there are other alternatives to concrete ceilings.

Pius Chelimo, a structural engineer with Trinity technical services limited, says the available alternatives have been abandoned by Ugandans because of the popular belief that what comes in from the west is more superior to our “African craftsmanship.”

Pius Chelimo and Ronald Atwine, both structural engineers, go ahead to identify the different ceiling alternatives that could be available for Ugandans.

Reed ceilings
This kind of ceiling according to Chelimo is made of reeds. It can be used in homes or any other public places like restaurants and bars among others. Chelimo says the cost of this type of ceiling will depend on the size of one’s house. He however explains that a square metre can cost about Shs10,000.
He says this kind of ceiling can be durable since reeds are rarely affected by insects like termites because of their strength.

Papyrus mat ceilings
This kind of ceiling is made of papyrus, and just like the reed ceiling, Papyrus mat ceilings are cost friendly. “Papyrus mat ceilings can go for an average cost of Shs7,000 per a square metre,” says Atwine a structural engineer with Excite Construction Limited. He add that this ceiling can be durable if treated. However, “It be affected by termites and other insects.”

Bamboo ceilings
These are made out of bamboo and are much durable. Chelimo however says it is quite expensive compared to the other types of ceilings. A square metre can go for an average of Shs50,000. However, when used, they can give your home a craft like look.

Sisal mat ceilings
These are made out of Sisal, a plant known to be very common in Uganda. Chelimo says this type of ceiling is mainly used in low cost houses, but can also be used anywhere because of the beauty it creates in a home, “A square meter can go for about Shs5,000,” says Chelimo.

Soft board ceilings
These ceilings are made out of recycled paper. They are not durable compared to other types of ceilings mentioned above. This is because they are easily affected by water and rats. Chelimo however says despite this, they are the most commonly used because they are cost friendly. “A square metre goes for Shs30,000,” he says.

Gypsum board ceilings
This is one of the most expensive types of ceiling according to Chelimo. He says, “A square metre goes for Shs250,000 because of its artistic nature and the beauty it creates in a room.” He also adds that this type of ceiling can be used in homes, offices and public places. They are majorly used in high end places. He also says that Gypsum board ceilings are durable.

Advice Since a ceiling is one of those things on a structure you may not plan to replace anytime soon, it is important that when choosing a type you go in for one that will stand the test of time and also make your house look beautiful.
