Color block your interior

With colour blocking, you can use the same colours but go for different shades

Colour blocking is now trending in the fashion industry. It involves wearing multiple bold/solid colours together. If you are bold in your fashion sense and do not fear to make a statement, this trend would work well for you.

But fashion aside, you can do the same with your interior, tossing out the obvious same wall colours, basic flower vase, matching set of chairs and you choose to give your room a splash of colour here and there.

Eunice Mugwaneza, an interior designer says colour blocking allows you to experiment with different colours and not just that one, but with more.

“Blocking does not only apply to opposite colours but rather they can be the same colour but using different hues or shades,” she explains.

Mugwaneza points out that the easiest way to take advantage of colour blocking for a mild effect is to keep everything within the same colour family, for example to choose different shades of the same colour.

Gloria Kawuma, another interior designer advises that you pick one colour you like and match it with a neutral colour. That would be an easy way to achieve the trendy look in your house.
She adds that you can pick curtains with a neutral colour such as beige or grey and you can pick sofas that are of a brighter colour. This will give the block effect.

All you have to do is to create a sharp contrast and use the different fabric to the furniture you wish to use or the paint on the wall.

You can also use colours from different families, where two could be neutrals and one could be a brighter shade.
Colour-blocking looks best when used upon neutral bases, so if your space is predominantly “pale”, it only works in your favour.”

Considerations
She also advises that you consider the room that you wish to decorate, saying that when deciding on the colours you want to use to colour block your interior, the function of the room should also be put into considerations.

“ If it is for a common area you have to keep it sophisticated therefore it is better to blend a bright colour with a more neutral colour but for a bedroom you can use the colours that work well together however bright they are.”

She also says you consider the location of the room for instance if it is a room that gets a lot of sunshine streaming in then you should stay away from the extremely bright colours. However for a room where there is a more natural lighting then you can blend the more bright colours.
Mugwaneza says to simplify your knowledge the easiest way is to know which colour best compliments the other but also the contrast to it, to give you the desired look.

How to choose the colours
The easiest way to pick the colours would be with the use of a colour wheel where you can easily identify the colours which complement each other and those that are closely related.
“Colour-blocking does not mean your colour selection must be bright, subdued ,shades work well too.” Mugweneza points out.

She adds that every interior has to have the backbone of the space, ‘the masterpiece’, so for the living room, it is sometimes the chairs, curtains or the rag. So when it comes to colour blocking you can pick the colours that rhyme with the master piece.

“There should be a colour that is more dominant than the others,” she adds.

Finally, she emphasises that you can use this style for any interior design, on any theme that you have going on in your house such as modern or vintage, the secret is in knowing the colours that will work best with these themes.

You can pull off the trend using furniture, accessories, wall hanging or paint. Then you will able to achieve the trendiest fashion in your interior.
