What you need to know:

  • Kirabo and Tasha say colour choice is not cast in stone on where one chooses to place them.
  • Cups or mugs, plates, fabric and art painting are also common and often used to bring out colours in a home setting.

It is said that colour has the ability to speak a silent yet beautiful language and going by trends, colours continue to play a pivotal role in setting vivid styles in our spaces, be it in our homes or social dens.
Each year comes with a particular set of colours that will dominate over others and 2017 is no exception. What’s in vogue varies with a continent, particular countries and even taste. Uganda is a consummative country which allows it the liberty to choose from what the world has to offer.
To let us into the trendy world, three interior and exterior decorators, Sanyu Diana Tasha, Suzan Mukiibi Kirabo and Francis Muzingu, offer insights on the trends in the world of trendy colours and décor to go with them.

In vogue
The trending decoration schemes include the vintage glamour, blush rose and the neutrals. All these are represented by a variety of colours.
“Colour is one of the easiest ways to shift the energy in your home or office in order to create good Feng Shui,” The pruce, an online platform states. Feng Shui is a Chinese metaphysical way of living that harmonises human existence with the environment around them.

“Vintage glamour is where we get to use a lot of natural items such as dated travel cases, tree branches and warm lighting while blush rose is mainly for the pink lovers who want to be trendy but at the same time timeless,” Tasha, General manager at Béau Decôr explains.
The neutral extreme is for the sophisticated that have a classic feel that won’t be out-dated in years. And because colour has everything to do with outlook, Kirabo lists white, silver and gold as the colours on vogue in the decor world for 2017.
Tasha adds to the list cream, ivory, off white as similar alternatives and then very light pink, bronze/rose gold, white and silver combo as another set of popular colour schemes.

Add a touch of creativity
Independent interior designer, Francis Muzingu, advises that vases are one of the commonest items with which one can use their favourite colours. He, however, says other items such as baskets, table mats and curtains can be used to showcase colour.
“You can choose to paint a small decorative basket in one or more colours depending on where you would like to place it. But the walls should speak more loudly than anything else in the house. Feel free to change the outlook of your house every now and then. ” Muzingu advises.
And for the bedroom, Tasha recommends warm colours since it is also a space for interaction. Use cream, peach, green and lavender to bring a tranquil vibe.

Cups or mugs, plates, fabric and art painting are also common and often used to bring out colours in a home setting.
Then, there is the rose garden, which is a low but long flower arrangement that is mainly made of roses. “I love flowers and candles. The smell of fresh flowers blends well with scented candles. They have an aura of mystery and romanticism,” Kirabo says.

The year is ticking away to its half race, which means that if you have not picked on the trendy colours, you are not late to the stylish party. It could be your chance to brighten up your home, and to borrow the Feng Fui for white, as a predominant colour, it is one for new beginnings, purity, and innocence.

Applying the colours

Kirabo and Tasha say colour choice is not cast in stone on where one chooses to place them. The two agree that warm colours such as green and blue work well in the interior since people would prefer to have vases in such colours for decorative plants such as bamboo that add life the living room, bedrooms and even the bathroom.
One can choose to have interplay of colours in scented candles on their bathroom floor or in items such as towels, toothbrushes and wall paintings. With Feng Shui, different colours stand for something. Orange for example is classified a colour that enhances socialisation, bringing out people’s vibrancy.

It is, therefore, put in social places such as the living room where yellow is also welcome since it is eye-catching, uplifting and brings out happiness. Colour is something you can have in mind when purchasing bed sheets, duvets or pillow cases.
“With colours such as white, silver and gold, there is uniqueness in the rhythm when they are used. They bring out the calmness and brightness of a place,” tips Susan Kirabo, proprietor of ‘Suki: The outfit destination.

Be Keen, observant
Take some time off to visit friends or family to enjoy each other’s company but to also make some keen observations,” Francis Muzingu, an interior designer, says. He observes that not all that you need is on the internet. We can pick many beautiful ideas from different spaces where we interact, such as dance studios, hotels, lodges, spas and bars among others.
