Explore exterior home lighting for an appealing night

Choosing the right lights for the right venue will make it sparkle.

What you need to know:

Outdoor lighting is an initiative of big hotels and mansion owners. However, you can incorporate it in your home and make it bright at night.

Most home owners are still stuck to a one security bulb out on the porch approach; this is probably because some have not realised the fact that they could have an alluring residence at night.
But if you want to change this ordinary look, it is a matter of exploring different lightings, especially in your compound and around the house. Lighting, despite being used as a security measure, can also beautify your residence and add a cozy feeling to your outdoor atmosphere.
You would want your porch, patio and backyard to look appealing, not just during day but even at night, especially on those days when the moon is still young or even when you and your family members want to have a moonlight dinner.
Little is left to be attracted to your house as darkness sets in but good lighting will draw attention to the plants and trees that may seem scary.
Also the lighting will highlight your homes outdoor structures.

Types of lighting
It is important to use the right lighting for the right space because it will make that particular space stand out.

Wall, ceiling and hanging lighting
These are commonly used in such a way that lights are put outside the house as a security measure.
These make your wall, ceiling and hanging lighting outstanding. You could use a not so bright light to make your porch to look cozy and entertaining.

Post lantern lights
These lights are normally used in the compounds especially home backyards and gardens to not only offer light to a person passing through but also help a person watch out for any crawling dangerous reptiles or caterpillars that may harm them.

Flood lights
These cast lighting to a wide area so with this kind of lighting, you will not need any other security lighting. However, floods lights normally give light to one direction but so you will need to use different lights and position them in different areas.

Cove lighting
This is lighting that is aimed at making a particular place stand out from the others. This lighting is normally used in swimming pools and fountains and they come in a variety of colour which will make add an allure to the place to make it ambient.

Dos and don’ts of lighting
Do not trouble your neighbours with light flashing into their homes.
Use one flood light to cater for both compounds if there is no fence to confine the light.
Use energy saving lights save costs.
Use weather resistant lighting materials.

Lighting space required

Claire Natukunda, an exterior designer at Nuwell Impressions Limited, advises that for anyone interested in using light to make their home stand out, it is important not to use too much lighting as it will the place blur, also not all lighting should be of the same colour, the beauty comes with mix matching different lights colurs.
The right size fixture should be put in mind especially for wall and ceiling lighting, you do not want to have a wall and ceiling lights out of aim from where you want them to flash light to. Proper positioning of these lights can only be done when the right measurements are taken.
For light control, one could also use dimmers, sensors and timers to monitor the light in an areas for example if you want to have dinner on your porch, it is just a matter of dimming the lights to fit a candle lit atmosphere you would want for your planned dinner.
