How he keeps his garden looking good

Kenny Kavita a garden owner, incorporated a number of ideas in his garden but if you cannot put all of them to use, you can choose one. You can either have a rock garden or one with roses. Photo by Constance Obonyo

I am Kenny Kavita a Kenyan businessman. I live in Umoja Estate, a middle-class neighbourhood in the Eastlands part of Nairobi . I have my own enclosed compound and the most unique feature about my home is at the entrance.

This is because of the nicely cared for garden with my name and the word “Welcome”.
I have put rocks in it. It is well decorated and attractive. So part of it is a rock garden.

There are many plants in my garden, but roses take up much of the space. We have mostly yellow and red roses.

I started working on it about 10 years ago, so I would describe it as a mature garden. Besides the roses, we also have trees, but no shrubs. We have umbrella trees and acacia all around.
I maintain my garden by weeding and spraying it twice a month with the help of a gardener.

When some plants wither, I plant new ones. Watering is a must, depending on the weather conditions. In the dry season, I water about twice a day. But on a normal day when it’s not hot, I water once.

Weeding is a must, because flowers require frequent weeding. I weed them every two days. I also mulch, to preserve moisture.

I use both compost and synthetic fertiliser. The use of synthetic fertiliser depends on the type of soil you have, especially the soil you use on your first planting. If it is poor, you must use a fertiliser. For maintenance, I use manure as a must.
It is a simple garden but the care I give it makes it look good.
