Keep intruders away from your home with motion sensors

What you need to know:

If security is what you want but do not want to have either a security guard of watch dog, you can opt for motion sensors.

A colleague once went to a friend’s home at night but he did not want the friend’s parents to know that there was a visitor at home. When he entered the gate, most of the compound was dark except for a few walk way lights.
So he thought he would be able to hide on the dark porch as he waited for the friend. However, mid-way through the walk way, a bright light from the porch was switched on and with it, everyone in the house started peeping through the window to see who was outside.

What it is
When he asked his friend who had switched on the light, he was told that the bright light was a motion sensor. According to Peter Ssebaggala of Electro Pal Enterprises in Kiyembe, motion sensors are automated lights that work in the radius of 50 metres for the ordinary ones but if advanced, it can go on to sense a human body temperature(heat)in the radius of 200 metres.

Installation
George Wasswa, an expert in installing motion sensors, says, an ordinary motion sensor system package can go for Shs1.2m. This is composed of an alarm, sensor lights and a camera, yet an advanced motion sensor panel can go up to Shs4.5m because it is fully packaged with all elements of a full security system.
It consists of motion sensor lights, DVR that connects with the camera to record each and everything in your absence, an alarm, router that sends you messages on your phone about anything at home if connected to the internet. An advanced panel also has a keypad command where it is programmed.
How motion sensor lights operate.

Ssebaggala says ordinary motion sensor lights are programmed to either switch on or off the light in case it comes into contact with a shadow of any moving object.

The advanced motion sensors are programmed to switch on lights when it comes into contact with body temperature of a human being in its operational radius of 200 metres and always operates at an angle of 360 degrees. However, one must position the lights in places that will help in covering all the paths that approach the house and this is if improved security is one`s number one priority.

AVAILABLE TYPES
George Wasswa, an expert says much as there are various motion sensor system types, there are commonly three types.
The passive Infrared system (PIR).This is the most commonly used type and it’s the one that detects heat and movement in the surrounding areas once the sensor warms up.
The Microwave system (MW).This type operates on detection of reflection pulses off a moving object. Though it covers a wider area, it is greatly affected by electrical interference especially during heavy rains and it’s more costly than the Infrared system.

The other type is the Dual technology motion sensor and this type is used by a few people because it’s a bit costly. This combines the micro wave and the infrared sensor type.

Wasswa advised all people interested in motion lights to always use experts in installing these lights so as to get the right positioning. He says lights should always be on the restricted entries such as the gate, front doors and behind door but also be in range with the surrounding windows.

pros

The motion activated lights offer assistance for those coming home to a dark house at night. As soon as you drive up your driveway and notice that the walkway is pitch black, you will breathe a sigh of relief because you know that as soon as you step out of the car, your motion activated lights will detect that you are home and pop on, lighting up the yard and walkway so that you can avoid any items in the path.
