Less Furniture for small living rooms

Big chairs work well in big living rooms.

What you need to know:

The living room is a place where you entertain your guests and yourself as well. Usually, it is the first part that people see. Choosing the right furniture and colours can boost it as Juliet Kigongo explains

Most of the time, family and friends gather in the living room. Bonding time would indeed be great, especially if you are sitting and relaxing in a well-decorated area.

Annet Kamba, proprietor of Phiona’s Interior Designers, explains that a design can tell the personality of the home owner. “Make sure that you decorate your living room in a manner that will give a positive impact to the visitors. If you do, your family and friends will surely love your home and will be inspired to re-design their own homes, too! Be an inspiration to others by setting up a truly inviting living room atmosphere,” she states.

The right colour
Kamba explains that for one to pull off a well centered and decorative look in their sitting rooms, you can use a great paint colour. Choose warm and neutral colours. Bright colours are also okay, just make sure that they don’t clash.

Kamba advises that one can install a painting in their living rooms; “When you use a painting for your living room, make sure that it suits the design concept of the house. Make sure the size is right, too. If you will place a painting that is too small, you can enlarge that by placing a large molding frame to the wall and have the painting inside it. Or you can have it framed in a large frame to make,” she asserts.

No matter how beautiful the furniture is, it may not look appealing if crowded in a small room.

The right furniture
Choose furniture that will make your living room have an exciting look. It would be better if your furnished pieces are of the same colour and fabric. Choose the right sizes, too. “Do not use oversized furniture if your space is small. Also, do not use too small furniture if your space is big. If you think that you will be engaged in rearranging, then you can opt for furniture with wheels,” Kamba advises.

She adds that it is better to have an open space for your living room. You can arrange your furniture in a central island if you have enough space. In the corner, you can place a tall plant or a sculpture. A more open space can allow better circulation. It could look better and brighter too.

Lighting
It is important for your living room to be well-lit. You can use overhead spots such as track lighting to highlight some areas. You may also use pin lights and some lower lighting. You could also place a table lamp which can also be an added decoration and even some floor lamps. Do not place light near the television for it already emits light.

Shapes
Use of various shapes can be of great importance for whatever you will place in your living room. Usually, rectangles are used for sofas, windows, rugs, and others. But you can still balance that by using other shapes for items such as round throw pillows, free form sculpture, oval coffee table and others.

Arranging the living room
Use four armchairs arranged around a light glass coffee table and add some delicate décor, such as a vase or a stack of coffee table books. To create a rich, warm ambiance, use large comfortable leather arm chairs and place a wood table between them. If you would like to create even more seating, try arranging two different sets of arm chairs on opposite ends of a long coffee table and then situating a sofa along the length of the coffee table.

Kamba says you can add some details in your living room by placing baseboards, window casings, ceiling details moldings, and many others. Add some accessories such as plants, paintings, vases, sculptures and others that can make your place more inviting. But do not use too much of it for it might look crowded. You may put some pottery on corners or end tables. Choose a creative looking lamp that can add beauty to your living room.
